THE FRANCHISE GUIDEBOOK

Franchise operations

A practical franchise operations guide to opening readiness, team responsibilities, weekly reviews, service recovery, and repeatable routines.

Make readiness observable

Walk through an inquiry, transaction, service delivery, and follow-up with the team. Test a foreseeable exception. Use the franchisor’s required procedures and applicable industry requirements rather than inventing shortcuts. Assign each gap to a responsible person and a completion standard. Opening day should begin with a workable process, not a hope that the team will improvise consistently.

Use routines that support the work

Create concise opening, closing, and handoff routines based on the operation’s actual requirements. Explain who does each task and how completion is checked. Keep training visible after the first session by distinguishing attendance from demonstrated readiness. Consult qualified professionals about employment, safety, licensing, and other requirements specific to your business.

Review cash and service together

Hold a regular review of cash movement, upcoming commitments, customer issues, and operational exceptions. Define each measure consistently and add context when a comparison would otherwise mislead. End the review with decisions and follow-up dates. The SBA’s planning guidance supports explaining operations and financial projections; the routines here are editorial planning examples.

Reduce unnecessary owner dependence

Identify issues that come to you because only you know the process. Clarify instructions, authority, training, and escalation routes before delegating. Test ordinary operation with a supported team leading. The first 90 days article provides a practical sequence for learning and stabilization, not a promise that every operation becomes predictable or passive within a set period.
