THE FRANCHISE GUIDEBOOK

Buying a franchise

A practical franchise buying guide covering owner fit, document review, market research, franchisee interviews, and final decision checks.

Create the shortlist around your constraints

Start with your available time, relevant skills, preferred operating role, and financial boundaries. Compare business models before reacting to individual brands. Use the same questions for every candidate so that a polished presentation does not win simply by being easier to understand. Keep waiting or choosing independent ownership on the list of possible outcomes.

Investigate before committing

Gather the complete current disclosure document and proposed agreements. Record receipt dates and save later versions separately. Have independent legal and accounting advisers review the actual proposal. The FTC Franchise Rule overview explains the federal disclosure framework; applicability and state requirements need professional interpretation. A completed waiting period is not evidence that all your questions are answered.

Test the operating story

Visit the proposed market, examine customer alternatives, and speak with operators whose circumstances add useful context. Ask for examples of training, opening support, recurring costs, and daily responsibilities. Do not combine informal conversations into an invented performance average. Preserve differences and use them to identify questions for the franchisor and your advisers.

Write the final decision memo

Explain why the work fits, which assumptions are supported, what the downside could look like, and which conditions remain unresolved. Reconcile financing, premises arrangements, and the final agreement before treating an opening date as fixed. A decision memo should be capable of recommending a pause. Its purpose is to make the evidence clear, not to justify a purchase you already decided to make.
